BT has today cemented its position as the UK's largest Wi-Fi provider by announcing a two million-strong hotspot network. The hotspots are available in homes, independent businesses, high street chains, major city centres and now the underground.


Influential Technology Companies & Operators join Wireless Broadband Alliance

The Wireless Broadband Alliance ("WBA"), a pioneer in global Wireless Broadband roaming for public Wi-Fi networks, has announced that its membership numbers are swelling as 10 more influential organisations join the Alliance.

At the 18th WBA Roundtable Conference & WBA Partners' Day in Auckland 2010, new technology members joining the alliance will include global giants such as Intel and Google; leading Wi-Fi network vendors Aruba Networks, Meru Networks and Ruckus Wireless; and the specialist roaming solution providers Accuris Networks and Aicent Inc.


London Underground and BT trial Wi-Fi at Charing Cross Tube station

Customers will be able to log on to the internet from their laptops or mobile phones at Charing Cross Tube Station from 1 November. London Underground has teamed up with BT Openzone, the Wi-Fi provider, to launch a six month trial.

BT today announced a new free mobile application that will automatically connect customers to its network of 1.6 million Wi-Fi hotspots, making it even easier for them to access the internet when they are on the move. To celebrate the launch, BT is giving 50p to BBC Children in Need for each free BT FON application downloaded, until they reach a target of £10,000*.


Campers turn to Wi-Fi on their holidays

The rise in 'glamping' or 'glamorous camping' has driven an explosion in Wi-Fi usage at UK holiday and leisure parks, including Camping and Caravanning Club sites. Usage rose 350 per cent in the first two weeks of the school summer holidays according to figures released today by BT Openzone.


Leicester Club unveiled as Millionth Wi-Fi Hotspot

A Leicester social club is celebrating after being unveiled as BT's one millionth Wi-Fi hotspot in the UK. Club Triangle in Coleman Road, Leicester, which uses BT Business Broadband, recently installed the service, to allow regulars and visitors to connect to the internet.

BT Openzone gets guests online at Macdonald Hotels and resorts

Visitors to Macdonald Hotels and Resorts across the UK will be able to use high-speed wireless internet access (Wi-Fi) through BT Openzone. Wi-Fi access will be available in public areas and over 4,500 bedrooms within all Macdonald properties by the end of 2009.
